Will Nokia debut “Solar charging” with Lumia 928. Was expected to show a solar charging device at MWC.

This is really getting interesting !! First Nokia teasing, “Sun, sun, sun here we come” and now there are two articles tipped to us by our dear reader “dojobi“. One article says that Nokia was already supposed to show some smartphone with solar charging at MWC with technology from French company SunPartner Group. The second article also mentions the same fact that Nokia and SunPartner Group are certainly going to bring solar charging with help of “Wysips technology” to Lumia smartphones.

Now, if you remember even Lumia 928 was supposed to be unveiled at MWC and later Nokia gave it a miss. So, bit of coincidence here!!

Wysips or “What You See Is Photovoltaic Surface” helps to have a solar battery on the display screen. A transparent photovoltaic component technology incorporating solar collectors in any display surface. This device fits below or above the touch screen of the mobile. Wysips is meant to be able to ensure 30 minutes of talking time after one hour charging on light. Best part is that Wysips would add less than $1 extra cost in the phone’s prime cost.

The company tells that their R&D has succeeded in achieving a 90% transparency rate and that their technology has no effect on visual quality or screen functions and is therefore optimal for the touchscreens of smart phones.”

Further, it is 0.5 millimeters or less in thickness and its two major advantages are transparency and power. Power means in this case that “it can already generate 5.8 milliwatts-peak per cm2.

“Integrated during the manufacturing process, below or on top of the touchscreen, it is connected to an electronic chip that converts and manages the energy produced. The photovoltaic component is recharged along with the device battery by exposure to natural sunlight or artificial light.

Nokia equipped Lumia 920 with wireless charging bringing wireless charging to mainstream, there can be no better way to bring “Solar charging” mainstream than equipping Lumia 928 with it. Though it still is just a speculation by us and may be later device like T-Mobile and Global version of “Catwalk” or 41 MP EOS may sport that as well for the first time. But, Nokia teasing the solar charging gives us hope of solar charging debuting soon !!

Did you bother to visit the SunPartner Group site?

“Together with thinness (0.5 millimeters or less), its two major advantages are power and transparency. It can already generate 5.8 milliwatts-peak per cm2; we are working to double that amount by 2014 using second-generation photovoltaic materials involving organic semi-conductor polymers. Since 2012, we have attained a 90% transparency rate.”

*IF* Nokia is incorporating *current* technology, it would be nothing but a gimick at those levels..even at 2014 levels. There is some interesting tech coming down the pipeline, but anything noteworthy from purely solar is years off.

    • Did you bother to read the post and source articls in first place. Sorry, I missed your comment earlier, but read this,
“Wysips is meant to be able to ensure 30 minutes of talking time after one hour charging on light. Best part is that Wysips would add less than $1 extra cost in the phone’s prime cost.”

I think it is already pretty doable, question remains when ?

    Sounds interesting.

I hope they patent this technology before Samsung copies this to their next device

  8. Hey, SunPartner Group did made a demonstration at MWC13 of their Wysips technology on a Windows Phone. I can’t confirm which one, but it might have been a Lumia 610…

I have the same thing on my watch and it works. But for a phone I am a little more sceptical, since phones usually stay in the pocket or handbag, especially out of doors, and often have a cover. Maybe it depends whether it will work indoors or not. My phone is only really exposed to the light when it is lying on my desk at work or lying on a table at home.

Ultimately, all progress of this type is good, even if it is not completely practical when first implemented. It will evolve into something genuinely useful and in the meantime it is a good selling point. What Nokia needs above all – and has at present in photography – are elements to distinguish Lumia phones from other Windows phones.

A final thought: this might actually be more relevant for the Asha line than the Lumia line, when you think about the target customers.

    • The article says “The photovoltaic component is recharged along with the device battery by exposure to natural sunlight or artificial light.” :). So, it works with artificial light as well it seems !!

why the model looks like an iPhone? 🙂
